Article on the “Second Generation” of Empirically Supported Therapies Just Published!

In an article just published in “Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice”(Strosahl & Robinson, “Adapting empirically supported therapies for the era of integrated care: A roadmap for success), I make the case that the current generation of empirically supported psychotherapies, must give way to a new generation of therapies that are designed for, and validated in, community settings such as primary care, schools, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and so forth.

The first generation of cognitive behavioral therapies were designed without any real attention being paid to consumer preferences for briefer interventions, or to the real world constraints of community settings, where very brief interventions are the rule, rather than the exception. We present a new list of criteria for validating new cognitive behavioral therapies as empirically supported. This one might create a bit of a stir!
